Stolen Emails Tie UAE Ambassador To 1MDB Central Figure - Reports

The plot appears to have thickened at 1MDB.

Newly-released stolen emails show deep-rooted ties between a notorious Malaysian financier at the heart of global corruption scandal and the United Arab Emirates ambassador to the US, according to media reports.

Yousef Al Otaiba, a high-profile player in Washington, has reportedly been connected to Low Taek Jho, a financier with Hollywood ties who authorities worldwide allege is at the epicenter of the misappropriation of billions of dollars from 1Malaysia Development Berhad, the state-owned development fund.

The pair's relationship is drawing new scrutiny from US, Swiss and Singaporean authorities, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the probes, dragging Otaiba into a scandal that is under investigation in at least six countries.

The stolen emails reportedly show Otaiba and Shaher Awartani, his Jordanian partner, discussing inquiries from various authorities about transactions they received from entities investigators say are affiliated with Low.

One email reportedly suggested Awartani buying a Ferrari after what Otaiba described as a “transfer from Jho”.

“I think we each deserve to buy a nice toy in celebration, what do you think ?? The 458 ITALIA maybe?,” Awartani reportedly wrote to Otaiba in 2009.

Otaiba reportedly responded claiming such “toys” in Abu Dhabi “will just attract unnecessary attention”.

WSJ said it was shown the emails by Global Leaks, but the operation declined to identity its members or say how they obtained the communications.

The probes are continuing.
