Opposition Demands List Of Indian HNWIs In Wikileaks Scandal

The Bharatiya Janata Party, India's main Opposition, has asked the government to list the names of Indian nationals holding accounts in Swiss Bank Julius Baer, the Times of India reports.

The call to action came after former Julius Baer employee Rudolf Elmer leaked details of 2,000 high net worth individuals from the US, the UK and Asia with accounts in the bank to the web site Wikileaks. Elmer, along with web site founder Julius Assange, has said that the names will be made public in the future.

"We are interested in the names from India and the entire country expects that those who have looted public money and invested abroad in Swiss bank accounts, their names should also be exposed," Ravi Shankar Prasad, BJP spokesman, was quoted as saying at a press conference.

The BJP has criticised prime minister Mammohan Singh for failing to reveal the individuals involved in black money transactions in Swiss banks even after promising to recover illegal funds stashed abroad within 100 days of assuming power.

"It is intriguing that there is no response from the Government on this issue," the party added.

Germany has already reportedly sent the list of names to the Indian government.
