Wealth management firms continued a busy season of hiring in March. Among the stand-out stories was the report that UBS is looking to significantly boost headcount in Asia.

United Kingdon

Standard Life Investments appointed Colin Clark as a director within its global client group.

Prior to the appointment Clark was a firm’s non-executive director for over five years. He has also worked at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and Mercury Asset Management.

Veritas Asset Management appointed Neil Cooper as senior analyst for its Global funds team.

Cooper joins Veritas from Insight Investment, where he was an investment analyst covering the global financial sector. His prior career also includes a six-year period as an investment analyst covering pan-European banking with UBS Global Asset Management, where he led the team managing the firm’s European Analyst Financials Fund.

Syndicate Asset Management appointed Ranil Perera as a non-executive director.

Perera is a risk and regulatory compliance consultant with more than 20 years experience in the financial services industry, working with Barclays Bank, Citibank, Price Waterhouse and Touche Ross.

He spent seven years at the Financial Services Authority, the UK financial regulator, where he worked in supervision and then in policy and also spent six years as a member of the disciplinary appeals committee of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants.

Syndicate also announced the retirement of David Pinckney, its non-executive chairman and member of the board.

Pinckney will be succeeded by the firm’s current executive director Peter Dew, the firm said in a statement to its shareholders.

Quilter recruited investment manager Mark Hendricks from HSBC Global Asset Management.

Hendricks, who is based in London in his new role, has over 15 years of experience in private client portfolio management and has held roles at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, City of London Investment Management and Grindlay’s Private Banking in addition to his most recent one at HSBC.

Merrill Lynch Wealth Management appointed Guy Wynter as a senior portfolio manager within Merrill Lynch Portfolio Management.

In his new role, which is based in London, Wynter will manage the portfolios of high and ultra high net worth clients, working closely with the wealth structuring and advisory tea.

Wynter was latterly a managing director responsible for charity and pension funds at BlackRock Investment Management and prior to this was at Hambros Bank as head of UK equities covering pension and insurance funds.

Collins Stewart appointed Gary Colley as investment director at its Isle of Man branch.

Colley joins Collins Stewart from Thomas Miller where he was previously head of private wealth.

Heartwood Wealth Management, the London-based independent wealth manager appointed Jade Fu and Jaisal Pastakia as investment associates in its investment management division. Fu joined from Barclays Capital while Pastakia was latterly an analyst at Dresdner Kleinwort.

Ecclesiastical Investment Management, the UK-based socially responsible investment group, appointed Neville White as a senior SRI analyst.

White will work with Ketan Patelm, another SRI analyst, and will support the fund management team in ethical research and screening.

White was previously manager, governance and ethical investment at CCLA Investment Management – a role he held for 13 years. He has also been secretary to the Church of England’s Ethical Investment Advisory Group.

London-based Octopus Investments appointed Neil Buckland as head of relationship management and partnerships.

In his new role Buckland assumes responsibility for establishing and overseeing the strategic focus of the firm's sales team. He will also be responsible for the leadership of the relationship management and partner tea.

Buckland joins Octopus from Zurich Intermediary Group, where he was an area sales director responsible for IFA sales in the southern UK region.

Nicky Richards, chief investment officer at Fidelity International, has resigned after four years at the firm to take a break from the industry. She is not thought to be joining another investment manager.

Richards, who became group CIO in 2007, originally joined Fidelity as CIO for European equities, having previously been with Schroders Investment Management.

Robert Higginbotham, president and CEO of Fidelity’s European business will take over her responsibilities on an interim basis.

Premier, the UK-based asset management company, appointed Simon King as senior investment manager, UK equities.

In his new role King will be responsible for running the £61 million ($91.8 million) Premier UK Thematic Fund as well as the Premier Smaller Companies Fund.

King joins the firm from Gartmore Investment Management, where he managed and co-managed a series of multi-cap long/short and long only portfolios.

Nerine Trust, part of the international fiduciary firm Nerine Group, made a quartet of Guernsey-based appointments, among them that of Rob Habin as chief operating officer for the group.

Habin was most recently a self-employed fiduciary software consultant and before this was with Julius Baer Trust Company in Guernsey from 1995 to 2008.

Mark Brown was appointed as senior trust manager. He has been working for Nerine since November 2009, having previously spent over three years with BSI in Guernsey.

David Morris was promoted to associate director with responsibility for client administration operations, while Alec Bain was named senior trust manager. Morris and Bain joined Nerine Guernsey in 2001 and 2008 respectively.

Insparo Asset Management added to its finance and operations team with the appointment of Nimika Karadia as operations analyst.

Prior to joining Insparo, Karadia was hired to represent Lehman Brothers during the administration process of its UK operations. Her role involved returning stock and resolving counterparty clai. She was previously an associate with R3 Capital Partners, where she was involved in operations development across a range of products including equity, FX and loans.

Alan Mathewson, director of the Bancassurance division at Santander, will take up the role of managing director of Santander Private Banking UK (onshore and offshore businesses) and Abbey for Intermediaries, a newly-created position, on 1 May.

Meanwhile, Alvaro Morales, former chief executive of Santander Private Banking UK, has moved to Florida to become chief executive of Santander Private Banking International.

Coutts & Co appointed Michael Hayman as regional chairman with responsibility for entrepreneurs.

Hayman is a public relations consultant and co-founder of the PR consultancy Seven Hills. He has also worked as a PR consultant with Coutts & Co, authoring Face Value a publication which looks at business leaders, brands, and reputation.

Peter Chambers, head of Legal and General Investment Management is reportedly to retire in September. He joined in November 2005 to succeed Tim Breedon when Breedon moved up to be chief of LGIM's insurer parent, Legal and General.

London-based TCF Fund Managers appointed financial analysis specialist Dr Jeremy Bezant to its investment committee.

Recently, Dr Bezant co-founded RFQ-hub, which is a bi-lateral price discovery and trading platform for listed and over the counter derivatives.

Eden Financial appointed Andrew Crickmore as an investment director for its wealth management division.

Crickmore spent four years as a divisional director at Barclays Wealth, formerly Gerrard Investment Management. He has also held positions at Ashcourt Asset Management, Rathbones Investment Management and Sheppards & Chase,

Standard Bank Isle of Man made a number of promotions across its trust, priority banking and institutional banking tea.

Annie Sanchez-Talavera was promoted to senior manager within the trust team. In this role she will oversee 17 staff. In other promotions within the team, Ian Hamer was appointed as manager, Michael McHale as assistant manager, and Sarah Bell as supervisor.

From the priority banking division, Chris Smethurst was promoted to assistant manager, business development, and Peter Giles and Janette Morgan were promoted to supervisory roles.

AXA added Shaun Sandiford to its team of distribution directors at its wrap platform, AXA Elevate.

Sandiford, who was previously head of sales at Ascentric, reports to Andy Coleman, head of business development for AXA Elevate. 

Tenet Group appointed Peter Charge as head of sales. Charge, who joined Tenet last May as a regional business manager, will oversee a team of business managers responsible for promoting the services of Tenet Select, the firm’s directly authorised services business.

COBA Asset Management, the London-based property investment firm, appointed David Richards, a City veteran who has held several senior private banking roles, as non-executive chairman with immediate effect.

Richards, was most recently vice chairman of Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch (UK), having previously been chief executive of the business, and he remains an advisor to the Lombard Odier Group.

Close Asset Management announced that Nancy Curtin is to become chief investment officer at the firm.

Curtin was previously chief investment officer at Fortune Asset Management, of which Close became the full owners in January after acquiring the minority equity stake.

Future Capital Partners expanded its business development team with the addition of Esther Lewis as business development manager.

Lewis joins the firm from Unicorn Investments, where she was manager of business development.

Ashcourt Rowan confirmed that Simon Murphy, head of the firm’s Edinburgh operations, has left after just a few months in role.

To cope with the departure, David Hanrahan, a director at the company, will be based in Scotland for one week each month for the time being. Meanwhile the firm is looking for a replacement.

Bestinvest appointed Michael Covell as chairman, and Peter Hall as chief executive officer to succeed founder John Spiers, who steps down from the position in June.

Hall will join the business in June - subject to FSA approval - and initially work with  Spiers, “to ensure a smooth transition of executive responsibilities,” the firm said in a statement. After this period,  Spiers will continue to be involved with the business as joint chairman of the asset allocation committee, a non-executive director and shareholder.

Hall joins from UBS Wealth Management, where he has been managing director of its regional and investment management business since 2006.

Covell, meanwhile, joined with immediate effect. He has held several non-executive roles in the wealth management sector, including at Hawksford International. Prior to this, he was a managing director at Goldman Sachs’ European private wealth management division.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch appointed Edward Raymond as a senior portfolio manager within the discretionary team at EMEA Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.

He joins the firm from HSBC Global Asset Management, where he worked for 16 years, most recently as director responsible for the London region.

Quilter expanded its Dublin team with the appointment of Daragh Murphy as regional sales manager in Ireland.

Murphy, who joined from Investec, has over seven years building relationships with intermediaries and IFAs across Ireland. In his new role  Murphy will report to Glenn Hawksbee, head of sales.

Coutts Private Office appointed Rupert Allison, formerly an HSBC Private Bank relationship manager as a senior client partner.

Allison will report to Duncan MacIntyre, global head of Coutts Private Office.

HSBC Private Bank added two advisors and a counsellor to its investment advisory business in the UK, hiring from Clariden Leu, Citi Private Bank and Bank of America.

Anna Blomqvist and Mark Winterburn were hired as investment advisors, reporting to Suzanne Spink, director, while Clare Huijnen joins as an investment counsellor, reporting to Henry Pott, associate director.

Blomqvist most recently worked at Bank of America, and launched and built up the bank’s US Equities business in Scandinavia.

Winterburn joined from Citi Private Bank, where he worked for five years as an investment counsellor covering high and ultra-high net worth clients both onshore and offshore.

Huijnen will work with HSBC Private Bank’s regional offices. She joins the team from Clariden Leu where she spent 12 years in the portfolio management unit of the investment business, advising relationship managers and clients about all aspects of their portfolios.

Edinburgh Partners, the Scottish wealth manager, appointed Graham Wood – formerly chief investment officer at Scottish Widows Investment Partnership –  as an investment partner.

Wood, who left SWIP in September 2009, will play a lead role in portfolio construction alongside Stephen Anderson in his new position.

Cavendish Asset Management appointed Tyrone Long as sales manager as part of its expansion plans for the retail market.

Long joined Cavendish from MLC Investment Management, where he had been a sales manager for two years.

RBC Wealth Management bolstered its London-based UK onshore business with the hire of Jonathan Gold as a director.

Gold, who specialises in tax-efficient investment planning, philanthropy, cross-border issues and charities, joined the firm from Alliance Bernstein Global Wealth Management, where he worked between 2006 and 2009.

Towergate Financial appointed Steve Petrie as a director within its private client business.

Petrie joined the firm from Alexander William, the City-based independent financial advisor, where he was the owner. He has also held senior positions at JP Morgan Asset Management, Zurich IFA Group and John Joseph Financial Services.

Oakley Alternative Investment Management appointed hedge fund investor Teun Johnston as a portfolio manager.

Johnston previously co-headed investments at Amundi AI, formerly known as Credit Agricole Asset Management Alternative Investments.

Henderson New Star bolstered its fixed income desk with the appointment of Ben Pakenham.

Pakenham is now co-manager of the £165 million ($250 million) New Star Extra High Yield Bond Unit Trust and the £236 million New Star High Yield Bond Fund. He reports to James Gledhill, director of fixed income at the firm.

Having begun his career at New Star in 2005 as a high yield analyst working alongside James Gledhill, Pakenham joined Henderson as part of the acquisition of New Star in April 2009.

Legg Mason, the US asset manager, appointed Mark Palmer as director of business development for the UK.

Palmer joined the firm from Fidelity International, where he was a sales director responsible for developing relationships with life and platform businesses.

In his new role Palmer sits within Legg Mason’s UK sales team and report to Justin Eede, head of European sales and client services.

Hassium Asset Management promoted Simon Black to director and junior partner.

Black joined the firm in 2007 and prior to his promotion was a senior financial analyst.

London & Capital appointed Sanjay Joshi as senior portfolio manager on its fixed income team.

In addition to directing the fixed income team, Joshi assumes responsibility for overseeing portfolio construction, asset allocation and London & Capital’s new UCITS income funds offering.

Joshi returns to London & Capital after a period with F&C Asset Management, where since 2006 he had co-managed a fixed income hedge fund.

Anita Rai, a lawyer focusing on employment and partnership issues for fir and high net worth individuals, has left London-based law firm Fox to work for Cambridge firm Taylor Vinters.

At Fox, Rai worked with the law firm’s founder, Ronnie Fox, who is renowned in the wealth management industry and other sectors for expertise on the often complex issues of employment contract law and related fields.

Schroders announced a series of changes to its board and board committees.

Sir Peter Job, currently the senior independent director and chairman of the remuneration committee, is to retire from the board at the conclusion of the firm’s annual general meeting on 6 May.

Andrew Beeson, who is currently chairman of the audit committee and a member of the remuneration committee, will succeed Sir Peter in both the roles he is relinquishing.

Succeeding Beeson in both his former positions will be Merlyn Lowther, currently a member of the audit committee.

In other changes, Luc Bertrand will step down from the audit committee and join the remuneration committee.

Additionally, Robin Buchanan, formerly president of London Business School and the senior partner of Bain & Company, the UK consulting firm, joins the board as a non-executive director with immediate effect. He will join the audit committee following the AGM, and will also be a member of the nominations committee.

Asset manager Aegon made two appointments in its distribution business: Iain Black was named chief operating officer, distribution, while Patrick Gale was appointed chairman of the distribution board, the non-executive board which oversees Aegon’s distribution businesses.

Black has previously led a number of key business development projects within the Aegon UK group. These included the launch and development of its Dublin business. Most recently he was managing director of the group risk business.

Henderson Global Investors expanded its fixed income team with the addition of a director.

Brigid Jackson was appointed investment director of fixed income, a position she will take up on 5 May 2010. In her new London-based role  Jackson will be responsible for designing fixed income mandates and overseeing and communicating strategy, performance and risk for institutional clients.

Jackson was latterly a fixed income strategist at Barclays Global Investors, a role she had been in since 2007.

Nandu Patel was recruited by Rothschild as a managing director in its private banking and trust business. He will take up his new London-based position in June and report to Gary Powell, head of Rothschild’s UK private banking business.

Patel was a long-standing employee of Morgan Stanley, having worked at the firm since 1990, latterly as a managing director and investment advisor.

LaSalle, the New York-listed real estate investment management firm, appointed Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz as European managing director.

In this newly-created, London-based role Lloyd-Hurwitz is responsible for continuing to develop the firm’s business strategy, exploring opportunities for further business growth and taking advantage of a recovery in European real estate. 

Societe Generale Private Banking Hambros appointed former Kleinwort Benson employees Rebecca Constable and Andrew Wimble as senior private bankers to its new regional office in Newbury.

In their new roles, Constable and  Wimble will deliver wealth management services to high net worth individuals in the Thames Valley.

Constable was previously a senior banker at Barclays Wealth prior to joining Kleinwort Benson. Prior to joining Keinwort Benson, Wimble worked as a discretionary fund manager for ANZ Grindlays Bank.

Sand Aire appointed Frank Jonuschat as a senior portfolio manager. Jonuschat previously spent six years with the Rockefeller Family Office in London and New York.

His prior career also includes positions at Switzerland’s Clariden Leu and Citi Private Bank, where he was responsible for advising and managing portfolios for ultra high net worth clients.

Jupiter Asset Management appointed former Investec senior manager John Tevenan as sales director, global financial institutions.

In this newly-created role Tevenan will be responsible for developing relationships among global wealth management businesses as well as increasing Jupiter’s share of this sector.

Tevenan will join the firm in May this year from Investec Asset Management, where he is UK sales director.

Baring Asset Management appointed Roberto Lampl to the newly-created role of head of Latin America equity.

Lampl was latterly with ING Investment Management, where he was a senior investment manager.

Lampl now reports directly to Tim Scholefield, head of equities.

JO Hambro Capital Management appointed a global emerging markets team comprised of fund managers Emery Brewer and Ivo St Kovachev in preparation for the launch of the JOHCM Global Emerging Markets Fund.

Brewer previously managed the Driehaus Capital Management Emerging Markets Growth Fund. St Kovachev, meanwhile, was previously a fund manager on a long-short equity fund.

 

Switzerland

The former chief executive of Credit Suisse Private Banking, Klaus Jenny, was appointed to the board of administrators at Geneva-based Edmond de Rothschild Holding. Jenny was a member of the general management at Credit Suisse until 1998 and has worked independently since then.

Goner & Cie announced that Serge Robin is to become a partner on 1 May. Robin was latterly general manager and chief executive of Merrill Lynch Bank (Suisse), a role he held for the past five years.

Union Bancaire Privée, the Geneva-based private bank, appointed Eftychia (La) Fischer as director general of its treasury and trading unit in a move to strengthen its executive committee. Fischer was most recently global head of financial markets services and treasury and also group chief risk officer with EFG International.

Merrill Lynch Wealth Management appointed Arnaud Lambillon – formerly of UBS Wealth Management – as a financial advisor covering resident non-domiciled UK clients and UK citizens based in Switzerland. For this role, which was newly-created, Lambillion is based in Zurich.

Vontobel, the Zurich-based private bank, promoted the following employees as managing directors: Baur Markus and Kipfer Marco from private banking; Alena Philipp from investment banking; Tarabini Castellani Francesco from asset management; Räber Thomas from operations; and Barth Beat from finance and risk.  

Reyl & Cie, Geneva-based private banking and fund management firm, appointed Nicolas Duchêne as the new managing director of Reyl Private Office. Duchêne was most recently with BNP Paribas Private Banking having joined the Paris-based firm in 2004. 

The former chairman of the governing board at Swiss National Bank Jean-Pierre Roth moved into the private sector and was named as the next chairman of the board of directors of Banque Cantonale de Genéve. Roth has worked at the Swiss National Bank since 1979; he became vice chairman of the board of directors in 1996 and chairman in 2001.

Barclays Wealth poached a senior private banker from Citigroup in Geneva, Yousef Affany, who was appointed to the post of managing director, senior private banker for the Middle East and North Africa based in Geneva. Affany worked at Citigroup for 6 years both as a senior banker and head of investments and portfolios.

Vontobel, the Zurich-based private bank, appointed Jean-Pierre de Glutz as the new head of its Geneva branch following Cédric Anker’s decision to resign.

de Glutz joined the Vontobel Group at the end of last year through its acquisition of Commerzbank (Schweiz), where during his 20-year tenure he held various management positions.

Balou Malonga, a senior private banker, left Credit Suisse in Zurich to join Barclays Wealth in GenevaAs part of the international private bank, Malonga now focuses on key clients as a member of the firm’s Africa team and the ultra high net worth team.

Société Générale Private Banking, strengthened its teams dedicated to wealthy Russian clients with eight new appointments and created a Zurich-based “Russian clientele” department. The new team comprises Avy Burstin and Yuri Smelyanskiy, who were respectively appointed manager and deputy manager of the Russian clientele department, together with private bankers Natalya Clemen, Iryna Semenets, Giancarlo Antonucci and Christopher Delsman. Additionally, two new private bankers, Victoria Arsene-Calugaru and Dmitriy Luzanov, were appointed to reinforce the team in Geneva.

A former veteran of Citi Global Wealth Management, Milan S Morjaria, left the US banking giant's Swiss office to launch MSM Investment Advisors, a multi-family office based in Geneva. Morjaria’s most recent role at Citi Global Wealth Management was that of managing director for Citibank (Switzerland), focusing on its ultra high net worth and family office client franchise in Europe. He worked at Citi GWM for 22 years.

Europe

Finam, the Russian-based investment holding company, promoted Eugene Zhilin to be director of its international markets brokerage services department. Prior to this appointment, Mr Zhilin headed the international markets forex-services department. He joined the firm in 2006 as a specialist within the consulting-analytical centre.

Bank Petrocommerce, the Russian-based banking group, appointed Sergei Karikov as vice-president. Prior to the appointment Karikov was a director within the security and information protection department at the firm. Karikov initially joined Bank Petrocommerce in 1998 as an advisor to the bank’s president.

Rosbank, the Russian-based firm which provides private banking services, appointed Ulan Ilishkin as deputy chair of the board. Most recently, in September 2008, he was promoted as a director of the department for organisational development and human resources at the firm.

UBS appointed Axel Hoerger head of wealth management in Germany, replacing Stephan Zimmermann. Hoerger, who previously worked at Goldman Sachs Group, will take his new role on 1 June and will join the management board at the German unit.

Zimmermann, who gave up his post as the head of the management board at the UBS German unit, took over as group internal audit at UBS in Zurich.

Aberdeen Asset Management Deutschland, the German arm of London-listed Aberdeen Asset Management, appointed Dr Hartmut Leser as the new chief executive and chairman for Germany. Leser took over from Patrick Walker, the head of European business development at Aberdeen Asset Management, who now focuses exclusively on his activities in London.

Aberdeen Deutschland also announced the departure of two senior employees; Bärbel Schomberg and Malcolm Morgan left the firm for personal reasons. Both were members of the management at the real estate asset management arm of the firm for more than six years.

Société Générale Cross Asset Research added to its fixed income and foreign exchange strategy team with the appointments of Mark Capleton and Valentin Marinov.

Capleton was named head of UK rates strategy and global inflation-linked strategy. He joined from Royal Bank of Scotland, where he headed European rates research. Marinov was appointed senior forex strategist, to focus primarily on foreign exchange research covering the G10 countries. He was formerly a senior forex strategist at Commerzbank.

Stockholm-based East Capital appointed Alexander Izosimov and Dick Lundqvist on the board as independent directors to East Capital and East Capital Asset Management.

Izosimov is chief executive officer of VimpelCom, the Russian telecomms firm, and served as chief executive officer of OJSC VimpelCom from October 2003 to April 2009. He is also chairman of the board of GSM Association and a member of the Council on Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship in Russia.

Lundquivst is a partner and chairman at Stockholm-based law firm Gernandt & Danielsson.

BHF-Bank, the Frankfurt-based private bank, appointed Marcus Hahn along with three others from Sal Oppenheim Group. Hahn was appointed head of sales trading at BHF-Bank, and had been with Sal Oppenheim since the beginning of 2005, when he joined as co-head of sales trading.

In the other three hires from Sal Oppenheim, Petra Kopper was named head of corporate access and road-show management, Claudio Vargiu was appointed senior sales trader and Juergen Kaup joins BHF-Bank’s equity sales team. Hahn, Kopper and Vargiu will take up their new roles at the start of April, while Kaup joins on 1 May.

Credit Suisse is expanding its fixed income platform in Russia with five sales and trading hires: Valery Pushnya joined as a managing director and head of trading for Russia and the CIS, leaving Deutsche Bank in Moscow where he was head of rates and FX trading for Russia and the CIS.

Alexander Danilenko and Anastasia Shamina both joined as directors, also from Deutsche Bank, where they were part of the Russia and CIS trading team. 

Sergey Sadomtsev joined as a director in the fixed income sales leaving Morgan Stanley, where he was head of Russia sales.

Alexandra Pavlova joined Credit Suisse from Royal Bank of Scotland as an associate to help grow Credit Suisse’s vanilla FX and rates flow businesses in Russia.

The chief executive of Nomura for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Sadeq Sayeed, resigned from his post at the Japanese banking and investment giant.

Sayeed follows the resignations of Jane Wang, vice chairman of China investment banking, Geoffrey Feldkamp, the head of equity capital markets for Asia Pacific and the departure of Asian head of equities Siggi Thorkelsson and co-head of fixed income Thomas Siegmund.

Finam, one of Russia’s largest brokerages, appointed Denis Kolousov as a director of its brokerage services department. Prior to this appointment, Kolousov headed the firm’s regional network department, where he began as a manager in 2005. He also previously headed Finam’s regional sales department.

The board of directors of Fortis, the Belgian banking group, proposed the appointment of Bridget McIntyre and Belén Romana as independent non-executive directors.

The board will propose the appointments - which would be for a period of three years - at a general shareholder meeting on 28 and 29 April 2010.

McIntyre joined RSA Insurance group in 2005 as UK chief executive and board director. 

Romana has most recently been at ONO, the Spanish telecommunications company, as director of strategy and corporate development. She is a director of Banco Español de Crédito (Banesto) and Acerinox, a stainless steel producer.

Following the nomination for independent board member, Paris-headquartered Société Générale announced that Tidjane Thiam – group chief executive of UK insurer Prudential – decided not to join the bank’s board of directors.

Credit Suisse appointed Federico Imbert as chief executive in Italy, joining from JP Morgan after spending his entire 36-year career at the US bank. Imbert is now based in Milan.

Callataÿ & Wouters, the IT firm serving the banking and wealth management sector, hired Edouard Beauvois as director of strategic alliances to drive the company’s global partnership management activities. He previously worked for more than ten years at SAP.

JP Morgan Private Bank appointed Pablo Lopez Medrano as a senior private banker in Madrid, Spain. Prior to joining JP Morgan, Lopez Medrano was a director in the private banking division at La Caixa. Before that, he was a vice president at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in Madrid. 

Finam Investment Company, the Russian brokerage, appointed Ernest Solodov as head of its regional relations department. Solodov, who first joined Finam in 2005 as a manager in the department of regional development and was recently the firm’s head of regional sales, now oversees the development of Finam’s regional network. 

Middle East

Morgan Stanley appointed Samer Al-Saifi as an executive director and investment advisor at its wealth management arm, WealthBriefing understands.  Al-Saifi joined Morgan Stanley from Dubai International Capital.

London and Hong Kong-listed Standard Chartered appointed V Shankar as chief executive of Middle East, Africa, the Americas and Europe with effect from 1 May. Shankar was group head of origination and client coverage.

Asia Pacific

RBS Coutts, the international private banking arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland, relocated London-based global co-chief investment officer Nick Cringle to Hong Kong.

Bank Julius Baer named David Lim as head of private banking South East Asia as of 1 February 2010. Lim was the deputy chief executive officer Singapore and head of investment finance.

UBS is looking to hire 400 client advisors in Asia, increasing its already 1000-strong team by 40 per cent.

RBS Coutts Singapore is boosting its private banker headcount, recovering after losing a large group to a rival about half a year ago.  It has since recruited 65 people, 12 of them bankers, Nick Pollard, chief executive of RBS Coutts Asia.

International

Tokyo-based Nomura Holdings has made a raft of new management appointments. The following changes are effective from 1 April 2010.

 Hiromasa Yamazaki, the current global markets deputy chief executive, will be promoted to chief executive officer to oversee the division’s operations. Akira Maruyama, the current global markets CEO, will become deputy president of Nomura Securities. Naoki Matsuba, head of global equities, is to take over as the new CEO for the Americas.  Rachid Bouzouba will be appointed co-head of global equities.  Yasuaki Ogiwara is to become president and CEO of Nomura Italia.  Albert Weng has been named head of the Taipei branch of Nomura International (Hong Kong).  Masahiro Goto, meanwhile, will move to London from Tokyo to take up the position of co-head of Investment Banking, EMEA.

Nomura additionally announced the creation of a group risk management planning department to be overseen by Shigesuke Kashiwagi, currently CEO for the Americas. In business support, Hiroshi Tanaka, currently group compliance head and chief information officer, will be appointed group chief administrative officer.

Appleby, the offshore legal, fiduciary and administration services firm, appointed five new partners to its funds and investment services, and banking and asset finance practices in its corporate and commercial practice group. 

Richard Addlestone joined the firm’s funds and investment services team in the Cayman Islands from Cayman-based Walkers, where he was a partner. 

Another former Walkers’ partner, Julian Black, joined the banking and asset finance team in the Cayman Islands office.

Matthew Stocker, latterly a partner at Maples and Calder, joined Appleby’s Hong Kong office as a member of the banking and asset finance team.

Matthew Feargrieve has been appointed to the Zurich-based funds and investment services. Feargrieve joined the firm from Mourant, where he was a partner.

Previously a partner and head of Jersey Corporate at Walkers, James Gaudin has now joined Appleby’s Jersey office.

In addition to the new partner appointments, partner Gray Smith, who joined Appleby in April 2009, moved back to the London office.

Deutsche Bank expanded the roles of three members of its senior management team in the Channel Islands.  Andreas Tautscher, the bank’s chief country officer for the Channel Islands, is taking on the role of global head of the financial intermediaries business, within the private wealth management division. Paul Shevlin, chief operating officer for Deutsche Bank in the Channel Islands, takes on the additional role of chief operating officer for Cayman and Mauritius. Mike Bird, formerly head of custody for Deutsche Bank in Jersey, was appointed chief country officer for Deutsche Bank in Mauritius.

Maples and Calder, the offshore law firm, appointed eight new partners. Matthew Crawford, John Dykstra, Jarrod Farley, Michael Richardson and Joannah Bodden Small have been made partners, based in the Cayman Islands. Phillip Ireland, Colm Rafferty and John Trehey have been appointed as partners based in Dubai, Dublin and Hong Kong respectively.

UBS’s head of equities has quit the Swiss bank. Daniel Coleman, who has been with the bank since joining as a graduate trainee in 1986, steps down with immediate effect.  His responsibilities pass to Neal Shear, the bank’s global head of securities, the publication reports.

Ogier, the offshore law firm, appointed Zac Lucas as a partner in its British Virgin Islands office. Lucas joined from BVI-based Harney Westwood & Riegels, where he was a partner and head of the trusts team.

North America

Oppenheimer & Co, the wealth manager, appointed David Fields joined the firm as executive director - investments and branch Manager in its Newport Beach office in California. Fields reports to Bob Okin, executive vice president - national sales.   He previously worked for most of his career at Smith Barney.

Washington, D.C.-based Evermay Wealth Management appointed John  Edwards as senior portfolio manager. Prior to joining Evermay, Edwards was a vice president and portfolio manager with Chevy Chase Trust.

California-based Oak Hill Investment Management hired Mark Anson as a managing partner and chair of the investment committee. Dr Anson comes to OHIM from Nuveen Investments, an asset management firm, where he was president and executive director of investment services.

Morgan Stanley Smith Barney poached a senior wealth advisor, Leif Olson, from Merrill Lynch to join its office in Bradenton, Florida.

UBS's brokerage unit in the US is laying off nearly 200 employees, including about 25 managing directors. The job cuts affect about 1.2 per cent of the unit's 16,925 employees.

Lazard Wealth Management, the US-listed wealth management firm, appointed Andrew Eberhard to the newly-created position of managing director and director of research.

Pictet Funds, the fund distribution arm of the Swiss private bank Pictet & Cie, appointed Paul Bowen as sales manager, UK North. Bowen joins after working for Legal & General for nine years.

Citi Private Bank in the US appointed two senior Barclays Wealth managers to take up posts in the Wall Street firm’s regional divisions.

Michael Smith will join as Midwest regional executive and Mark Connally as Southwest regional executive. The men will join as managing directors and report to Peter Charrington, chief executive of Citi Private Bank in North America.

Mr Smith, who will be based in Chicago, joins from Barclays Wealth where he was managing director and head of the Midwest region.  Mr Connally was managing director and Southwest regional manager.

Jason Chandler, chief of UBS Wealth Management's ultra-high net worth business in the Americas, is shaking up his executive team a month after taking charge of the unit, changing a number of positions. Mr Chandler, who succeeded John Straus as head of the Swiss bank's Private Wealth Management unit on 5 February, installed Frank Minerva as his chief operating officer.
