Canadian bank reels in ex-Barclays private banker

Former head of business development for U.K. private bank returns to CIBC. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) has appointed former Barclays executive Gary Whitfield to help run its Wealth Management division.

Return of a native

Whitfield, who will be based in Toronto, comes to CIBC from Barclays Private Banking in London, where he was head of business development and head of wealth-management services for U.K.-based expatriates.

In fact, Whitfield is making his second appearance at CIBC, where he worked for nearly a decade before shifting to Barclays. In his last stint there he was a wealth manager in the bank's business-services unit.

CIBC Private Wealth Management division includes CIBC Trust, CIBC Private Banking and CIBC Private Investment Counsel. -FWR
